UNDERSTAND THE AWAKE LIPOSUCTION EXPERIENCE

Awake Liposuction in Chicago

BodyLuxe offers awake liposuction in Chicago using tumescent local anesthesia instead of general anesthesia. Patients typically remain awake and able to communicate, and BodyLuxe’s branded procedure is FormSculpt. This page explains what being awake means for planning, comfort, communication, recovery, and the questions to ask before choosing the approach.

During consultation, Daniel J Farrugia, MD PhD FACS explains what you may feel, how comfort and monitoring are handled, and whether a targeted FormSculpt or 360-degree plan fits your health, anatomy, and goals.

KNOW THE DIFFERENCE

How awake liposuction, FormSculpt, and FormSculpt 360 differ

Awake liposuction describes the anesthesia approach. FormSculpt is BodyLuxe’s branded tumescent local-anesthesia liposuction. FormSculpt 360 applies that approach to a coordinated midsection plan.

Awake liposuction

The term describes liposuction performed with local anesthesia while the patient typically remains responsive and able to communicate.

FormSculpt

BodyLuxe’s branded approach to tumescent local-anesthesia liposuction, used for targeted areas or a planned 360-degree configuration.

FormSculpt 360

Selected abdomen, waist, flank, and back areas are planned together to create a connected contour.

Explore awake liposuction by treatment area

The anesthesia approach is one part of your plan; the areas you want to change determine which procedure guide is most useful. Explore FormSculpt 360 for the abdomen, waist and selected back areas, arm liposuction, chin and neck liposuction, or inner thigh and knee liposuction. Your consultation confirms what is appropriate and what your written plan includes.

What being awake means during liposuction

You are intended to remain responsive rather than fully unconscious under general anesthesia. You may feel pressure, movement, or brief discomfort even when the area is numb, and medication can be individualized for anxiety and comfort.

Before surgery, Dr. Farrugia explains the planned level of awareness, monitoring, comfort plan, preparation, and discharge instructions so you know what to expect.

The American Society of Anesthesiologists explains that local anesthesia numbs a limited area while you remain alert, whereas general anesthesia causes loss of consciousness. The type used depends on the procedure, health factors, and patient preference.

Read the ASA patient overview of anesthesia types.

Is an awake approach appropriate for you?

Candidacy depends on more than wanting to avoid general anesthesia. Dr. Farrugia considers your health history, medications, anxiety and comfort needs, the amount and location of fat, prior surgery, treatment extent, local-anesthetic considerations, and whether the requested plan can be performed appropriately in this setting. A smaller, staged, alternative, or no procedure may be recommended.

Your treatment areas

You show us the areas that matter most, and Dr. Farrugia identifies which contours belong in the plan and how they should transition into surrounding areas.

Comfort and monitoring

The team explains numbing, awareness, monitoring, comfort options, and how unexpected discomfort would be addressed.

What liposuction can change

The examination determines whether localized fat is the main concern and how skin, abdominal-wall anatomy, visceral fat, or prior scarring may shape the result.

The options that fit you

You receive a clear recommendation for targeted treatment, a 360 plan, another procedure, staging, or no procedure.

Safety and health considerations

The safety discussion focuses on your health, prior procedures, treatment extent, medication, monitoring, and recovery support.

Recovery and support

You leave with instructions for activity, garments, medication, follow-up, warning signs, and a clear way to reach the BodyLuxe team.

Local anesthesia and general anesthesia

Local and general anesthesia differ in consciousness, medication, monitoring, and recovery considerations. Understanding the plan helps you ask better questions about comfort and safety.

Dr. Farrugia considers the planned procedure, treatment extent, your health, and your preferences before recommending an anesthesia approach.

Your written plan explains monitoring, comfort support, what could change the plan, and which symptoms after discharge need prompt attention.

What awake liposuction feels like as a care pathway

Consultation and treatment plan

Tumescent solution numbs the planned area, and additional medication may be used for anxiety, pain control, and comfort when appropriate. Patients typically remain able to communicate during treatment. The technique is still surgical liposuction: Dr. Farrugia performs the markings and fat removal, while the team monitors you and provides individualized care before, during, and after the procedure.

Numbing, comfort and monitoring

Before treatment, the team reviews numbing, expected sensations, comfort support, monitoring, and the plan for unexpected discomfort.

The procedure

Dr. Farrugia removes fat through small access sites and shapes the transitions according to your anatomy and written treatment plan.

Going home and follow-up

You go home with clear instructions, scheduled follow-up, and guidance about when to call. Recovery depends on the treated areas and any combined procedure.

What awake liposuction can change

Awake liposuction can reshape localized fat beneath the skin. The result depends on the treatment zones, fat distribution, skin, underlying anatomy, and healing—not on the anesthesia label alone.

  • Subcutaneous fat can be addressed by liposuction; visceral fat inside the abdominal cavity is not removed by liposuction.
  • Skin may not contract enough to match the desired contour, and loose or rippling skin can remain or become more noticeable.
  • Muscle separation, hernia, skeletal structure, scar tissue, and prior procedures may affect the plan or make another approach more appropriate.
  • Some concerns require a different operation, a staged plan, or no procedure.

Recovery with a clear support plan

Soreness, bruising, swelling, firmness, drainage, and temporary numbness can occur. The number and size of treatment areas, prior surgery, combined procedures, health, work, and individual healing influence recovery. BodyLuxe provides instructions for walking, compression, medication, work, exercise, travel, and follow-up.

Before surgery, the team reviews transportation, help at home, garment and access-site care, medication, activity, work, follow-up, and warning signs.

Swelling and firmness continue changing after the first days. Follow-up helps determine when the contour is ready for a meaningful assessment.

Awake does not mean risk-free

Important risks include bleeding or fluid collection, infection, delayed healing, scarring or pigment change, prolonged swelling or altered sensation, contour irregularity or asymmetry, skin injury, blood clots, medication or local-anesthetic complications, and possible revision. Remaining awake changes the anesthesia plan; it does not eliminate the risks of surgery. Dr. Farrugia reviews how those risks apply to your proposed treatment.

Dr. Farrugia explains which risks apply most to your health and treatment extent, what alternatives exist, and which signs after surgery need prompt evaluation.

Awake liposuction FAQs

Is awake liposuction the same as FormSculpt?

Awake liposuction describes liposuction performed with local anesthesia while the patient typically remains awake and able to communicate. FormSculpt is BodyLuxe’s branded approach to tumescent local-anesthesia liposuction.

Is awake liposuction the same as FormSculpt 360?

FormSculpt 360 is an awake liposuction plan for selected connected midsection areas. Awake liposuction can also be used for targeted regions.

Does awake mean no discomfort?

No. Tumescent local anesthesia is used for comfort, but sensations and medication needs vary. The plan should not be described as pain-free.

Does local anesthesia automatically carry fewer risks than general anesthesia?

The approaches have different considerations. Your overall safety depends on patient selection, procedure extent, medications, monitoring, technique, and postoperative care; a universal superiority claim would be inappropriate.

How much does awake liposuction cost in Chicago?

Cost depends on the treatment areas and the plan created with you. After consultation, you receive a written quote. When comparing options, ask which areas are included, which fees are mandatory, whether another procedure is being added, and which recovery items or services are included or paid separately. Review our procedure pricing and bring any questions about the total to your consultation.

How long is recovery?

Some patients with desk-based work return within several days to about a week, while extensive or combined procedures may require longer. Your clinical instructions control timing.

How do I know whether I should remain awake?

Dr. Farrugia considers the proposed procedure, treatment extent, your health, and your preferences, then explains his recommendation and alternatives.
